Get To Know Massage Therapist Darci Barton
Working out is a great way to keep your body strong, fit and healthy — but it can also sometimes lead to soreness or pain. When that happens, BodyBusiness massage therapist Darci Barton is here to help. As she approaches her one year anniversary at BodyBusiness, here are a few things you may not know about Darci.
Why did you choose massage therapy as a career?
I have my master’s degree in social work, but realized that wasn’t the way I wanted to help people. My wife is a massage therapist and one day I realized that helping people physically, mentally and emotionally could all happen within the therapeutic model of massage.
Did you study for this in school?
Yes! I attended a local massage school (Lauterstein – Conway Massage School and Clinic) and completed their 500hr program. I also keep up with continuing education every year.
Do you get massages for yourself?
A few times a month, yes. Our bodies crave consistency, so just like working out, regular massage yields more benefits the more consistent we are in receiving it.
Advice for a new client on how to describe their pains/ailments in order to help you help them?
Let me know when the pain started, is it constant or only when you move. I like to listen to the whole story and ask questions to fill in the gaps until I am sure I understand what’s going on and even then, I like to check in throughout the session to make sure we are doing beneficial work.
Why is massage therapy a vital component of health care?
It supports pain management naturally. It increases circulation and lymphatic flow with the benefit of connection.
What is something most people don’t know about massage therapy?
It reconnects us with our bodies on more than a physical level. We move around all day long, and sometimes forget to tune-in to our physical bodies unless something is wrong. Massage therapy helps us slow down and re-connect to ourselves, and that can lower stress and leave you feeling better overall.
Where were you born? Grew up? Went to school?
I was born in Utah and lived there most of my life. I moved to Austin 4 years ago and attended Lauterstein & Conway Massage School here. In Utah, I attended the University of Utah for my master’s degree.
What did you want to be when you were young?
I (thought) wanted to be a psycho-therapist like my father.
Do you have any hobbies? What do you do during your free time?
I enjoy listening to and playing music, tending to my house plants, hanging with my family and dogs and being outside in nature!
What is a perfect day to Darci?
Having no plans and letting the day unfold spontaneously!
What is the most challenging part of your job?
It can be energetically draining if I’m not taking good care of myself emotionally and physically.
What do you do with assisted stretching?
Assisted stretching is one of my favorite modalities! It is super beneficial and something that is over-looked. I help my clients increase their flexibility and mobility through gentle and focused stretches, specific to their needs.
What brought you into BodyBusiness Fitness Club?
A referral from a previous employee that is a dear friend of mine without even searching for it. What a blessing!
Do you have any pets?
Yes, they are my fur babies! We have two shih tzus, Phin and Violet
What are some of your favorite quintessential Austin spots?
Barton Springs, Sculpture Falls, Lake Travis, Torchy’s, Rudy’s, Stubbs outdoor concert venue.
Can you explain Aroma Touch Technique for those interested?
It is a clinical approach to applying essential oils along energy meridians and visceral contact points of the back and bottom of the feet. It helps to stimulate and balance the sympathetic and para-sympathetic systems of the body.
How do you provide clients “Pain Management” as listed on the BB website?
It all starts with listening and having empathy towards what they are going through. I use focused work on areas of concern, orthopedic techniques, body mobilizations and post-session client education.
How did you and Hannah (her wife, also an amazing massage therapist here at BodyBusiness!) meet and how long have you been together?
We have known each other since 9th grade! It wasn’t until about 7 years ago that we re-connected through her sister and have been inseparable ever since. We dated long distance for 2.5 years before I moved here and have been married 3.5 years.
What are some of your favorite movies, books, tv shows, albums, etc?
4 Agreements, anything by Brene Brown, Law of Attraction and many more. I like fantasy and sci-fi movies. I also like watching documentaries, especially if animals are involved! Asking me to pick my favorite album is like asking a mother to pick their favorite kid!
