Get To Know Personal Trainer and Rowing Instructor: Tanner Rhodes

You may recognize Tanner from the Front Desk at BodyBusiness or Mark Brown’s Workout of the Month videos, but he’s recently added a new role: Rowing Instructor. Tanner now teaches Row On Stamina on Friday mornings at 8:00 a.m. Tanner is also a certified personal trainer offering one-on-one sessions as well as coaching Small Group Training.

Where did you grow up?

What inspired you to go into the fitness business?

Growing up I played sports my entire life and my friends and I were all very active. I became fascinated with how the human body operates, responds, and adjusts with exercise and nutrition. So I decided to go to Stephen F. Austin University to study Kinesiology for Fitness and Human Performance and Nutrition. That passion for fitness and health has always moved me in the direction to help people on their health journey as well.

What was the worst job you ever had?

In high school I worked at Hollister for a whole 3 weeks before I quit. My lungs could not take being vaporized by terrible cologne any longer.

What is your favorite inspirational saying or motto?

“It Pays To Be A winner”. A motto used by the US Navy SEALs. This motto never leaves my mind.

What is the most embarrassing song on your playlist?

“Adore You” by Miley Cyrus. I am not ashamed.

What is your favorite song or artist to work out to?

My favorite song to train to currently is Rooster by Alice in Chains. My favorite album to listen to is the Mothership by Led Zeppelin.

What do you do during your free time?

I am mostly training in my free time whether it is hitting the weights, the pull-up bar or swimming laps in the pool. Training is my life, but my second passion is learning. I love to read books. I have my own large personal library of books I have read in the past and that stack continues to grow weekly. When I am not training or reading, I try to hike and be outside as much as possible. I love the sun!

Do You Have Any Unusual Talents?

I can hold my breath underwater for 3 minutes, but I’ll admit I have not tested this in a while.

Favorite cheat food?

When I cheat, I don’t play games and I do not hold back since it is so rare. It is usually a juicy cheeseburger followed by ice cream and as many cookies my body can handle. Then of course that spirals down into a horrific blood sugar crash that no man can escape.
